Pilates küçük yaşlarda astım ve romatizma hastalığı olan sağlıksız bir çocuktur. İlerleyen yaşlarda bazı sporlarla uğraşarak kendini geliştirdi. Bu isim bir bireye ait ve kurucu ismi almıştır. Bu tekniğe ismini veren Joseph Pilates'tir. 1. Dünya savaşında kampa alınarak askerlere kendi tekniğini öğretti amacı özel ve kendine ait olan teknikler geliştirerek sağlıklı ve diri vücutlar oluşturmaktı ve bunu da başardı. Artık herkes onu konuşuyor ve ondan ders almak için çaba harcıyorlardı. Aslında bu tekniği birçok ünlü ismin de benimsemesi ile dünya çapında giderek yaygınlaştı ve reklamı yapıldı. Bu teknik 30-40 teknik sayesinde tüm vücut adına gelişimi ve sağlıklı bir bünyeyi vaad ediyor.
