İhtiyar kukla ustası Gepetto yalnızlıktan kurtulmak için bir dilekte bulunur ama bunu öyle kalpten ve samimiyetle yapar ki Mavi Peri isteğini gerçekleştirir. Son yonttuğu ve Pinokyo adını verdiği kukla sabah olduğunda canlıdır. Gepetto buna çok sevinir ancak bir sorun vardır. Pinokyo canlıdır ama gerçek bir insan olabilmesi için geçmesi gereken zorlu bir sınav vardır. Pinokyo gerçek bir insan olmak için olmadık maceralara atılır. Önce Tilki ve Kedi'yle sonra sihirbaz ve kuklacı Arlecchino'yla tanışır. Arlecchino'nun sirkinde dans edip şarkılar söyler. Dostu cırcır böceği Jim sayesinde dünyayı ve kendini tanırken iyilik, dürüstlük, sevgi, aile gibi kavramları yakından inceler.
